Newspaper design is the most demanding form of editorial design because it must serve multiple masters simultaneously. It must communicate news priority through visual hierarchy, sustain reading across 40 pages of dense editorial, accommodate advertiser requirements without compromising editorial integrity, be produced to deadline by a non-designer team, and survive the unforgiving scrutiny of a reader who encounters it every day.
Most newspapers do not have design problems. They have typography problems - body type that is too small, leading that is too tight, column measures that exceed the comfortable reading width, and headline hierarchies that make every story look equally important. These are solvable problems. They are solved at the grid level, before content enters the page.
Every newspaper design engagement begins with an editorial audit - mapping the publication's section architecture, its advertisement positions, its production workflow, and its reader demographics - before a single type size is changed or a single grid line is moved.

Newspaper Design Services - Delivered Across Every Format
Daily & Weekly Newspaper Design
Complete daily and weekly newspaper layout and production - front page architecture, section design, editorial grid systems, masthead design, and full-edition templating that allows in-house teams to produce each edition consistently.
Masthead & Brand Identity Design
The masthead - the newspaper's primary brand identifier - is designed as a typographic system that commands authority at the top of page one and scales consistently across digital, print, and broadcast applications.
Section & Supplement Design
Business, sports, culture, opinion, lifestyle, and weekend supplement sections are designed with distinct visual identities that operate within the parent newspaper's design system - recognisably part of the same publication, yet visually differentiated.
Broadsheet & Tabloid Format Design
Broadsheet, tabloid, berliner, and compact formats are each designed to their specific proportional and typographic requirements - with column grids, image proportions, and headline scales calibrated for the physical format.
Digital Edition & ePaper Design
Screen-optimised digital editions, ePaper replicas, and app-native newspaper layouts are designed with swipe navigation, responsive typography, and image presentation that translates the print experience to digital without compromise.
Template Systems & Staff Training
Production-ready InDesign template systems are built for newsroom teams - with editorial templates, advertisement placement guides, and style sheet documentation that allows journalists and sub-editors to produce each edition without a dedicated designer.
A newspaper page is not designed from the top down - it is built from a structural grid up. The six elements below define the design system that determines where every word and image on the page will sit, long before today's edition is known.
Column Grid
The fundamental division of the page into vertical columns - typically 5–8 for broadsheet, 4–6 for tabloid - with fixed gutter widths that establish the visual rhythm of every page.
Masthead Zone
The top 15–20% of the front page is reserved for the masthead, date line, and secondary reference strip. No editorial content penetrates this zone - the masthead's authority depends on spatial inviolability.
Headline Hierarchy
A five-level headline scale - splash, second lead, single-column lead, brief, and caption - with defined type sizes, weights, and column spans for each level. No story sits outside this scale.
Image Grid
Photographs are sized to column widths - 1, 2, 3, or full-page - never to arbitrary pixel dimensions. Image height is determined by the story's prominence, not the photograph's natural proportions.
Advertisement Positions
Defined advertisement positions - strips, half-pages, quarter-pages - are fixed across the template system. No advertisement is placed outside these positions, protecting both reader experience and advertiser context.
Body Text Specification
Body type size, leading, column measure, and justification are specified globally - typically 8.5–10pt, 120–140% leading, and 50–65mm column width. These values are never overridden by individual page editors.
Three newspaper design engagements documented - each with the editorial challenge, the design decisions made, and the measurable outcome for the publication.

The Chennai Herald - Complete Broadsheet Redesign for a 40-Year Institution
An 18-year-old newspaper design carries enormous institutional weight - readers have established reading patterns, advertisers have built campaign workflows around existing advertisement positions, and the editorial team has production habits that are inseparable from the existing templates. A redesign that discards this accumulated institutional knowledge - even in the service of modernisation - risks both reader alienation and commercial disruption. The design had to modernise without discontinuity.
The redesign was structured as an evolution rather than a revolution - preserving the existing masthead's typographic DNA while replacing its technical execution with a hand-drawn vector version at three times the original resolution. The 6-column grid was retained but the gutter widths were reduced from 4mm to 3mm, allowing the column measure to expand by 3mm across all six columns without changing the page's visual rhythm for readers who would notice the change subconsciously but not consciously. A new typeface hierarchy was introduced gradually - section by section over six weeks - with the front page last.

"We had not redesigned the Herald in 18 years. Every previous attempt had been abandoned because someone would say 'the readers will leave.' Caseyug Design showed us that the readers don't leave if you respect what made them stay - and redesign the things they couldn't see, before redesigning the things they could. The masthead looks new. The Herald still looks like the Herald. That is the hardest thing to achieve in a newspaper redesign and they achieved it in 12 weeks."

Five phases - from editorial audit to press test. The audit determines what changes. The press test confirms the changes work.
01
The existing edition, its editorial structure, section architecture, advertisement positions, and production workflow are audited before any design work begins - establishing what must be preserved and what can be changed.
02
The masthead - the publication's primary identity - is designed or redesigned as the first element, establishing the typographic DNA, authority register, and visual character that all other design decisions will follow.
03
The column grid, headline hierarchy, body text specifications, and section header system are designed as an integrated typographic architecture - tested across multiple mock editions before any template production begins.
04
Production-ready InDesign templates are built for every page type - front page, section fronts, editorial spreads, sport pages, and advertisement integration guides - with full style sheet documentation.
05
A proof edition is printed at the production facility before final handoff - verifying ink coverage, image resolution, masthead reproduction, and colour accuracy against the approved design under live press conditions.
Newspaper design has been practiced inside working newsrooms - not in isolation from the production pressures, deadline realities, and editorial constraints that determine whether a design system is actually usable.
Every newspaper design is delivered with a full print specification - paper weight, ink coverage limits, bleed settings, and colour profile - ensuring the design that was approved on screen matches what comes off the press.
Template systems are designed for sub-editors and journalists, not designers - with clear structure, locked elements, and production guides that allow a non-designer to produce an edition-quality page within a deadline.
Every newspaper design is produced with both print and digital editions in mind - the typographic hierarchy, section architecture, and visual language are designed to translate without compromise between formats.
Template delivery is followed by in-newsroom training sessions - conducted with the production team in their own environment, on their own hardware, using the actual edition files from the day of training.
Broadsheet, tabloid, supplement, and digital edition are four distinct design briefs - each with its own grid proportions, typographic scale, image treatment, and reader contract. Click each edition type to see the specific design principles that govern it.
Front page architecture
The front page functions as a poster, a contents page, and a brand statement simultaneously - every element from the masthead to the page 1 tease strip must be designed with all three functions in mind.
Headline scale hierarchy
A broadsheet headline hierarchy runs from the splash (100–140pt) through the second lead (60–80pt) to single-column stories (24–36pt) - each size communicating news priority without requiring the reader to read first.
Photography scale decisions
A broadsheet photograph at column width communicates differently from the same photograph at full-page width. Scale is an editorial decision, not a layout convenience - and must be governed by the story's significance.
Column measure and readability
A 5-column broadsheet typically produces a 57–65mm column width - within the optimal 50–75 character line length for sustained reading. Wider columns require larger body type or tighter tracking to maintain readability.
